What Plan B is
Plan B is emergency contraception. It is a single pill of levonorgestrel, a hormone that delays ovulation so sperm has no egg to reach. It prevents pregnancy after unprotected sex or a birth control failure, such as a broken condom or a missed pill.
When to take it
Take it as soon as you can, and within 72 hours. It works best the sooner you take it, and it works less well with every day that passes. If it has been longer than 72 hours, still call us, because there may be other options.
What it is not
Plan B prevents pregnancy. It does not end a pregnancy that has already started, and it is not the abortion pill. If it has been more than a few days, or your period is late, a pregnancy test will tell you where you are.
How to get it from us
- Call (602) 462-5559 as early in the day as you can, and tell us how long it has been.
- We will tell you what is open today and see you quickly.
- A licensed OB/GYN practice means you can also talk privately about your options and your questions.
Side effects
Most women have few. Nausea, headache, tiredness, breast tenderness and spotting are the most common. Your next period may come a few days early or late. If you vomit within two hours of taking the pill, call us, because you may need another dose.
Things to know
- Plan B does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. We can test for them if you are worried.
- It is for emergencies, not for regular use. It is less effective than regular birth control.
- Levonorgestrel can work less well for women with a higher body weight. If you weigh more than about 165 pounds, tell us so we can talk through your options.
- Take a pregnancy test if your next period is more than a week late.
Birth control for next time
If you want a more reliable plan going forward, ask about a Mirena IUD or other birth control during your visit.
